up the creek with a paddle

The story is simple. It is about love, life and hope. After years of battling with the onslaught of her husband's Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, Mary stumbled on a little known doctor in New York City, Dr. Bernard Bihari. Many people on the internet claimed that Dr. Bihari knew how to stop every type of MS from progressing. Even better, it was claimed that he could help everyone with an autoimmune disorder, ranging from psoriasis to AIDS. It was claimed that Dr. Bihari could help them with Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN). Eventually, Mary's husband took a leap of faith and put Dr. Bihari's work to the test. LDN worked. It stopped his MS from progressing. Since September 2002, a worldwide campaign has ignited with passionate momentum to get LDN medically recognized as a treatment for MS and all autoimmune disorders. LDN is a cheap, generic, out of patent drug with no known side-effects. Despite the fact that there is no financial incentive to entice any pharmaceutical company to investigate new uses for Naltrexone, the ambition is for LDN to hit the masses and improve the lives of millions. Small scale LDN clinical trials are finally making progress across the globe and are paving the way for a much better future for everyone who suffers from an autoimmune disorder.

A Special Note from Dr. Bernard Bihari:

In 1986, when I first discovered Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN), if I had Mary on my team, this drug would have been approved, marketed and manufactured by a reputable pharmaceutical company. I have no doubt about this.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Mary Bradley and her husband, Noel, for more than six years. Mary's book, Up the Creek with a Paddle, is a superbly honest and truthful testimony to the benefits of taking Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN). Mary details Noel's success with LDN for his Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis in particular, and also includes many other LDN stories from people with a variety of autoimmune diseases.

Mary has been a true soldier and endless fighter in her pursuit to get LDN to the public, so that they too may benefit from taking this once a day, inexpensive capsule and reap the benefits of this amazing drug.

Mary is a gifted author and I am truly blessed that she is in my life, both as a friend and as a valiant crusader on behalf of LDN. She is one of the most passionate and caring human beings that I have come to know.

Bernard Bihari, M.D. New York City December 3, 2008

Outskirts Press announces Up the Creek with a Paddle: Beat MS and All Autoimmune Disorders with Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) from author Mary Boyle Bradley.

Mary Boyle Bradley has done an excellent job in presenting astounding new uses for a cheap, generic, out-of-patent, FDA approved drug, Naltrexone. She has also proved that she is a natural and gifted author. Mary draws the reader into her personal story from the very beginning with her Irish wit and innate passion. Her zealous nature is admirable, but it is the sheer honesty of her story, told simply, that makes the book difficult to put down.

Up the Creek with a Paddle is an easy and educational read with plenty of humor to balance the pain. Although LDN has been used for MS and many autoimmune disorders, safely and effectively for over 20 years, the information is only starting to reach the masses in a validated fashion, now. Backed by many reputable doctors and long awaited, recently published scientific papers, Mary s ambition is to find a way to get the FDA to approve new uses for Naltrexone. Since September 2002, Mary has spearheaded an effectual grassroots, global campaign to get LDN medically recognized and into the hands of people who need it as much as she did.

Deftly constructed at 247 pages, Up the Creek with a Paddle: Beat MS and All Autoimmune Disorders with Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) is being aggressively promoted to appropriate markets with a focus on the Health & Medicine - Diseases category. With U.S. wholesale distribution through Ingram and Baker & Taylor, and pervasive online availability through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and elsewhere, Up the Creek with a Paddle meets consumer demand through both retail and library markets with a suggested retail price of $16.95.

Additionally, Up the Creek with a Paddle can be ordered by retailers or wholesalers for the maximum trade discount price set by the author in quantities of five or more

Thank God for this book and for LDN , August 29, 2008

Mary and her husband have ,thankfully, not suffered in vain. LDN which came to my notice through this book has significantly improved my health which had been detiorating for several years. I am so grateful to Dr. Bihari for bringing LDN to people like me who suffer from auto immune disorders. This treatment which is safe and inexpensive has been an answer to my prayers. The symptoms which I had already developed still come and go but much less frequently than before. Most importantly , no new symptoms have developed since I started taking LDN. I am able to more fully enjoy life with my husband and our 5 children without being in pain and exhausted all the time. I only wish that G.Ps in Britain would do their homework and prescribe this drug more readily. I have personally encountered a lot of ignorance and arrogance among some GPs who know little about the treatment and are unwilling to learn. Thankfully in the Republic of Ireland it is more widely known and available. It can be prescribed safely to women who are trying to conceive and at 4.5 mg can be taken safely during pregnancy. If you suffer from any auto immune disorder or suspect that you do, I would urge you to read this book and try LDN. If your GP won't prescribe it , don't give up. I obtained my treatment through a private prescription and it is well worth the £28 per month.Anyone who has been helped by LDN should publicise the treatment as widely as possible. I really feel that we have duty to help others who might benefit. THANK YOU MARY - KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !

Sometimes clear and definite personal experiences "anecdotes" are better proof than cloudy "gold standard" research. Though formal medical research is still in early stages, a neurologist who refuses to use "unproven" LDN for MS amd Crohn's disease is needlessly letting his patients suffer and decline. This book is in agreement with many other "anecdotal" sources that this is a more effective treatment than the expensive (profitable) and painful drug treatments the doctors demand. I (author of HONEST NUTRITON) have a niece and two close friends with MS and several with Crohn's. They should get this safe and effective treatment. Thank you, Mary Bradley, for writing a very clear, readable, and convincing book.

If you have MS or any autoimmune disease...READ THIS BOOK!, October 10, 2007

Reviewer: "T.Harrison" I was diagnosed with MS in July 05 at 29. In Jan of 06 I ended up paralyzed from the waist down due to an severe exacerbation. I was not on any of the C.R.A.B. drugs at the time, but was using holistic remedies that I had read about. After getting out of the hospital I went on Copaxone. While it seemed to help, I was not thrilled about taking a shot everyday nor the $3000 a month cost of the medication. I was relentless when it came to looking for other therapies. I stumbled on this book by just searching for literature on MS here on Amazon. The book looked unassuming, but the title was too intriquing to pass up. I bought the book and read the entire thing the day I received it. WOW! I was so excited! I was having difficulty finding a Dr. to prescribe LDN as most seem to follow the standard protocol to avoid lawsuits or because of pressure from drug companies. I emailed Mary and she emailed me back and within a week I found my current doctor and have not looked back. I have been on LDN since mid April and am so thankful! My muscle spasms have decreased so much I don't have to take any other meds for them. My bladder dysfunction still persists, but is so much improved that I only take half the dosage of those pills now. And, it is SOO nice only taking a pill at night before bed than giving yourself injections everyday. Finally, the cost!! I spend $30 a month for my LDN. My costs have been cut 100 fold. If you have MS or any autoimmune disease I would encourage you to read this book. Everyone (NMSS in particular) keeps touting that an oral medication is just around the corner....IT'S ALREADY HERE AND AVAILABLE!!!!

Very interesting!!!, September 23, 2007

After 10 years of traditional therapy I decided after a lot of research to try LDN. The book was easy and enjoyable to read. Shared with my support group. This treatment has some remarkable success but little support since trials are rarely done. It would be fantastic to have an inexpensive drug recognized for its positive benefit on chronic debilitating illnesses. We need the $$$$ signs to go out of the drug companies mentality and push to investigate and be positive on helping so many who struggle daily. Maybe more success stories need to be published.

Mary Anne Bradley is an Angel, January 29, 2007

I was recently diagnosed with MS this past June and through an incredibly fortunate turn of events,my In-Laws suggested I read Mary Anne's book...which I did. It is so well written, chock full of imperitive information that I was not receiving through the medical community, provided much insight into this desease, and at times humorous and touched me in an amazing way. Yet, I was even more touched to again have the incredible good fortune to actually meet Mary Anne and her husband Noel in person in July. To say that she and her family have been thoroughly instimental while I'm on this journey is an understatement.'Up the Creek with a Paddle' is an absolute must-read for anyone grappling with a life-altering disease, whether the person directly affected or the caregivers/family/friends. LDN has provided me with such massive help and hope and had it not been for Mary Anne Bradley, I would never have known about LDN's existance. To read this book and learn of LDN will turn your life around, to have met Mary Anne and Noel Bradley restores your faith in true Earth-bound Angels! Thanks for them both and thanks for 'Up the Creek with a Paddle' will never be enough. Mary Anne is a true pioneer and has the fortitude and tenacity that is seemingly lacking in the medical community on a whole. Her book should be a must-read for anyone going through very difficult medical challenges...not exclusive to MS. Thank you so very, very much for everything, Mary Anne!!!

LDN is a treatment for MS (and other autoimmune diseases) that MUST be taken seriously by the medical and research communities. Mary Bradley gives an easy to read personal account of her LDN journey on behalf of her husband who has MS. She is articulate, informed, and shares a wonderful sense of humor. Clearly she did her homework before pushing her husband to try LDN and readers can benefit from the work she did. Her ongoing efforts to get clinical trials for the use of LDN in the treatment of MS and other diseases demonstrates her compassion and dedication to others who are dealing with these conditions.

One of the most important contributions Ms. Bradley makes is the hope she gives to those suffering from MS and those of us who love them. In fact, my sister emailed her about her daughter/my niece (diagnosed with MS in 9/05)and Mary Bradley CALLED her back! She was full of hope and encouragement which meant so much to my family. Read this book! It is full of valuable information and the author really cares!

It is a well writen book detailing how hard it is to get movement within the medical world, to approve a drug that is better than anything on the market,is generic, and is not expensive.

The medical world will not press for a medical trial, which is quite expensive, since it will not benifit the drug companys.

LDN is the real thing. READ THE BOOK.

God sends us people like Mary!, June 25, 2006

Reviewer: "Mia DV"

Reading Mary's book is like having a cup of coffee in a good friend's kitchen. You can't put it down. I've always been optimistic that we are very close to solving autoimmune diseases- so much so, that one of my specialists feels that I may be in denial, and keeps reminding me there IS NO CURE! But, like Mary, I am cautiously optimistic, and refuse to just lie down and let this disease envelope me. LDN offers hope for those of us who are looking for a tool to help us fight our diseases, and take back our quality of life.

Some would call Mary persistent. I would call her relentless. She does not jack-hammer her way through solid rock, but because she perseveres for all those she loves, she is most assuredly beating a path through that solid rock! When that final barrier comes down, we who suffer, and wish, and wait, will finally enjoy the rewards she is earning for us. That day is close.

Thank you, Mary. You don't even know me, and many thousands of others like me world wide, yet you are looking out for us because we are somebody's Noel, somebody's child, somebody's sister/brother, somebody's mother/father. God indeed works through you. Bless you and yours. Love, Mia DV- Scranton PA. JohnnieBravosMom@adelphia.net

Inspiring, engaging, and timely story of overcoming auto-immune illness, December 5, 2005

Reviewer: "Nathan Kennard"

Mary Bradley tells her engaging story of discovering the drug low dose naltrexone (LDN). LDN can arrest the progression of autoimmune diseases and unlike other pharmaceutical options, is inexpensive, orally administered and almost free of adverse side-effects. Reading of the impact that this drug had on Mary's family, I understand her profound motivation to 'spread the word'. Besides being well written and enjoyable, this book lit a fire in me and I have shared the book with many family and friends.

As a person diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, it is refreshing and inspiring to read about treatments that work. After 6 months using the drug, LDN, I agree with Mary that this is a drug with wonderful potential and which all people who deal with auto-immune related illnesses should know about and consider using. Thank you Mary

The information in this book continues to be relevant and appreciated by myself and my friends. I ascribe credit to LDN for halting MS for me for 3 years now. (August 2008)

Fascinating story, 12 Sep 2005

I bought this book and immediately started reading chapter after chapter. I found it very "un-put-down-able" (to use Robert Carlyle's character's non-word when referencing another MS-related book in the excellent 'Go Now'). I mean, I've got MS myself, I'd intended to read the first chapter and go to sleep, I had to get up early the next day for work ... and I still found myself reading up until 3 o'clock in the morning.

Everyone with MS (or affected by MS, as Mary Boyle Bradley is) has their own story to tell. Mary's one, as covered in the book, runs from roughly 1990 to the present day. Its only in the last few years that her husband, Noel, has started taking the new drug, LDN. But the story up until he did is fascinating for all its plot changes, decisions, dilemmas and, above all, humanity.

Truly, a great read.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS BOOK!!!, August 10, 2005

I wish I could've given this book more than 5 stars! It is a must have with anyone who knows someone with an autoimmune disease or who has MS. I am so grateful that Mrs. Bradley has worked so hard to get the word out about LDN, it is the best available treatment for MS. Don't hesitate to purchase this book, it is worth every penny!

FANTASTIC Read With Great Hope for Autoimmune Illnesses, June 19, 2005

Reviewer: "Becky L. Simpson"

Ms. Bradley has done a fabulous job in presenting this exciting new therapy for MS, lupus, and other autoimmune illnesses.

Her tireless advocacy is inspiring! I have no doubt that she and the LDN community will get the trials underway and LDN will prove effective.

SHARE this book with those who need it and donate a copy to your local library to help others.

Amazing and certainly life affirming...., June 15, 2005

Reviewer: "JoyceF"

I would recommend that everyone with an auto immune disorder read this book. It is a story that I can affirm because I have met Mary Bradley and her husband Noel. I am living that story today and even though many people don't like to use the word miracle, LDN is surely a modern day miracle. This book is written in the manner of a true Irish story teller. Mary has that true Irish charm to her and this books reflects her manner of conversation. The story is told in the most charming way. I really hope that she succeeds in getting Oprah's attention because LDN is what could surely change the world if only it gets the recognition it deserves. I think this book is one step towards that goal. Thanks Mary and blessings to you and Noel. JoyceF

First Book about Low Dose Naltrexone, June 4, 2005

Reviewer: "Nancy S. Davis"

I appeciate the fact that Mary Boyle Bradley took the time to write this book about a treatment for MS and other autoimmune disorders. This treatment is largely heard about over the internet and is only FDA approved at higher doses, 50 mag., for opiate addicts. Dr. Bihari discovered that at lower doses it can be used to treat MS, Parkinson's, Crohn's, and other disorders. The reason why the USA has not pursued this treatment is it is not a profitable one. Mrs. Bradley's husband was rapidly progressing with his MS and switched from Avonex to LDN, and has done much better with LDN.

I encourage you to read this and you will get an understanding of how backward the medical community and NMSS really are. Mary is trying to get a large scale trial for LDN and MS in Ireland, as well as, LDN and AIDS in South Africa. Here, she would like the help of Oprah Winfrey, because LDN could save millions of lives very cheaply. Thank you Mary for all your efforts! And thank you Dr. Bihari, the man who who gave us LDN!

Great Book, June 4, 2005

My experience has been that the accepted medications for multiple sclerosis do not work. I've used Avonex, Copaxone, Novantrone and they're worthless. Low dose naltrexone is inexpensive and without serious adverse side-effects. You owe it to yourself to give this a try. Mary's book is written in a down-to-earth manner which you can finish in a few hours. She comes across as a wonderful lady.

This book has brought so much light to my life. The idea, the hope, the honesty means more than words can say. For Mary Bradley to open her heart like this is unbelievable. As someone with MS, I hope that many people can get the hope and encouragement they need from this book to realize the opportunities out there for them....
